This is part three of our “Best North Georgia Mountain Hikes” series. Our first two hikes are Smith Creek Trail and Mount Yonah Trail. Today let’s talk about Raven Cliff Falls Trail located just outside Helen, GA, about a 20-minute drive from Lucille’s Mountain Top Inn & Spa. If you’re looking for a moderate out-and-back trail with gorgeous views of the creek along the way and a spectacular waterfall at the midpoint, you’ve come to the right place!
Location
Raven Cliff Falls Trail is located at 3000 Richard B Russell Scenic Hwy, Helen, GA. It is contained in the Raven Cliffs Wilderness area, part of the Chattahoochee National Forest, which is just about 10 minutes from downtown Helen. It’s a 5-mile out-and-back trail that is considered easy because of its moderate incline (about 560 feet), although some folks find navigating the roots, rocks, and narrow pathway a little more strenuous than a typical “easy” trail. The good news is that the trail is well-maintained, so it should be in good shape. Make sure you take your particular abilities into account when deciding to tackle this trail. Parking is $5 per vehicle.

The trail starts out with a gravel path and meanders through the hardwood forest, which provides shade throughout the hike. Keep your eyes open for wildflowers and lush vegetation as you walk along the creek. Early on in the hike, a wooden bridge will allow you to cross over Dodd’s Creek while you enjoy the beautiful rushing sounds of the water. At about mile 2, you’ll come upon the lower falls which cascade over mossy boulders into a small pool. After another half-mile further, you’ll come to the upper falls, a spectacular 40-foot waterfall that cuts through the large granite cliff. It’s a spectacular sight and well worth the effort to get there!
