Spring Wildflowers Abloom In North Georgia Mountains

Spring is poking its sweet head up all around Lucille’s Mountaintop Inn & Spa!

Field of yellow wintercress.

It’s the beginning of wildflower season and that means you’ll find pops of color across the hills and along paths in the forests. So, pack your bags, book a stay and come enjoy this lovely season in the mountains.

Just outside of Helen is Anna Ruby Falls. Take a walk on the paved trail there to spot spring ephemerals—violets, trilliums, Jack in the Pulpit, bloodroot, and others. There is also an abundance of flowering shrubs this time of year. The short hike leads to the falls, which are often at their peak in the spring. In this same area, the 4.5-mile Smith Creek Trail, which goes from the base of the falls to Unicoi State Park, provides a more strenuous hike but can offer a chance to see a wide variety of seasonal flowers.

Vogel State Park, about 10 minutes south of Blairsville, Georgia (northwest of Lucille’s), is home to Sosebee Cove, a forested north-facing cove with a habitat that promotes a diversity of spring wildflowers. It’s a great place to look for goldenrods, asters, showy orchids and other species native to the area. Visit on Earth Day, April 22, and you can join the park’s Wildflower Hike there, led by a Naturalist.

If you’re up for a challenging hike with stunning views and pops of wildflowers, head up the Mount Yonah Trail (trailhead is located between Cleveland and Helen). The four-mile round-trip trek goes from the base to the summit on a winding trail that passes through a boulder-filled forest teeming with flowers in the spring. You should have good luck spotting a variety of plants along this route.
