Old World and New Mix at North Georgia Winery

Driving up to Serenity Cellars, located a little over five miles south of Helen, you might forget you’re not in the Tuscan countryside.

Set in the rolling hills of North Georgia Wine Country, with a stone structure that evokes a charming Italian stone villa, Serenity Cellars looks every bit the part of an old country winery. In reality, it is a thoroughly modern-day venture.

Owners Joe and Tina Smith started Serenity Cellars to create artisan wines utilizing the latest techniques. The results have been impressive, with more than a dozen pours that range from light and smooth to bold and fruit-forward. The lineup includes a Pinot Grigio that is fermented at extremely low temperatures yielding supple flavors of pear, lemon and lime. Bianco Bello is a light Alsace blend of four grapes, with a taste that pairs nicely with seafood. Reds include Majestic, a complex blend that’s aged a minimum of 18 months, giving it a dark berry flavor with a hint of spiciness; Tranquility, a unique blend of five grapes; and 2012 Harmony, a smooth drinking wine that evokes flavors or spice and dark cherries. If you enjoy a little chocolate after dinner, give Dolce Bello a try. This dessert wine explodes with flavors of blackberry, blueberry and rich chocolate.

The Tasting Room at Serenity Cellars is open daily. Here you can sample wines and, if you like, purchase cheese, crackers and other treats from the gift area. Weekends are a particularly fun time to visit, as the winery hosts live music every Friday night, and Saturday and Sunday afternoons. When the weather is nice, guests can enjoy the beautiful vista from the outdoor deck.
