Glass Mountain Gallery: Works Of Art in Helen, GA

High in the mountains of Georgia, the Glass Mountain Gallery & Studio fashions fine glass art that makes its way to collectors and homes throughout the world.

Established in 1996 by artists Philip and Janine Shelby, Glass Mountain Gallery & Studio creates a remarkable display of beautiful work. bluegreenoverlaybowl-jpgPhilip specializes in hand-blown glass, using both Italian and Scandinavian styles of glassblowing to create stunning vases and bowls and other unique pieces. lgblingonblackplate-jpg

Janine uses fused glass kiln techniques to fashion intricate pieces, many incorporating hundreds of thin glass strings fused together. Always experimenting, her newest pieces incorporate techniques such as raking molten glass.

Inn guests can get an inside look at how this talented duo works during their open studio tours, which run now through Thanksgiving. The building itself is interesting, a renovated general store that was built in the 1930’s of solid oak construction. But the main draw is the studio where visitors can learn the intricacies of glass, and watch the artists “dance with fire” as they work with furnaces that operate at 2200 degrees. You’ll also get to see glass blowing, as well as the cold shop where cutting, grinding and polishing take place. A fascinating tour!

Following the tour, you can check out Glass Mountain Gallery to see the wide range of art pieces crafted by Philip and Janine. Holiday shopping, anyone?
