North Georgia Candy Kitchen A Sweet Destination

Where better than the alpine village of Helen, Georgia, to find Hansel and Gretel. The beloved storybook characters give their name to one of the sweetest places in the area: Hansel & Gretel Gourmet Candy Kitchen. (We count ourselves among its fans!)

It’s hard not to feel like that proverbial kid in the candy store when you walk through the doors of this cute little shop. Sweet aromas waft through the air and a dizzying array of lusciousness tempts you. The shop, which was started in 1973 by David Jones and his wife, Janet, is still a family affair with daughter, Diana, and her husband, Mike, now part of the business.

Known for its high quality, hand-crafted chocolates and candies, Hansel & Gretel is a fun stop, and a great place to find gifts. (Speaking of gifts… Stay with us, and you’ll
find special welcome chocolates in your guest room, handmade by the company
just for Lucille’s!) Fudge is another favorite and

the shop makes theirs the old-fashioned way—in a double boiler—and in more than 15 flavors. The very first candy Hansel & Gretel made was Gourmet Brittle, still a crowd pleaser.

So are truffles, chocolate-dipped strawberries, and a special called “Puttin on the Ritz,” which has two crackers sandwiched with peanut butter and hand-dipped in white and then mile chocolate. Mmm. The list goes well over 100 varieties of confections.
